OUR HISTORY

Following the migration of Jews during the 1930’s from the East end of London out to the suburbs, local Jews in Chingford decided to establish a Synagogue in the area.

The Synagogue opened in 1937, and over the next 20 years grew rapidly as the community went from strength to strength.

By the 1960’s the shul boasted a membership of over 400 families. It was the fulcrum of the local Jewish people creating a community was incredibly close-knit. The Synagogue boasted a large Cheder, with up to 100 children attending religious education classes. There was a thriving Ladies Association, a very successful Combined Appeals Committee, who raised thousands of pounds for the Synagogue and charitable causes, a Classes Committee, a Parents Association, a Youth Club, a Friendship Club and generally, the community was enthusiastic, supportive, and determined to thrive.

Until the 1990’s the Synagogue was successful with only a minor decline in numbers, but from this period onwards with very few new members moving into the area there began a gradual decline as many members moved to out of Chingford and Highams Park. and no young families moving in to replace them.

Over the last 20 years sadly our Synagogue has declined, with membership numbers dwindling, however we have still managed during these difficult times to continue maintaining a meeting point for the local Jewish community.

A new Board of Management was formed in 2012, and they aim is to keep the Synagogue thriving for the good of the community, and to hold regular services every Shabbat, and for all festivals and High Holydays.
